Electrical Safety Web Workshop Session 10: NFPA 70E / CSA Z462 – Approach Boundaries, Definitions & PPE Requirements
Date: Friday, November 13, 2009
Time: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST
Two of the biggest sources of questions related to NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 relate to the definitions of the approach boundaries and the selection of appropriate PPE. This session will explore the definitions in the standard(s) and will give attendees practical guidance on approach distances and when and what type of PPE is required when working with energized electrical equipment.
Join Hugh Hoagland of E-Hazard for a 60 minute Reliability Roadmap Web Workshop to learn more about this important standard.
Space is limited.

| NEW at National Safety Council Show in Orlando |
|
| There were several exciting new items and services at NSC.
Salisbury’s new “weight balancing faceshield” makes wearing an arc flash faceshield almost effortless. It isn’t even on the website yet. It’s rated at 12 cal/cm².
Disclosure: “I don’t sell these or work for Salisbury. Just a great product I got to test and work on design modifications.
e-Hazard.com introduced their electrical safety audit tool and service. This third party external audit service and internal audit tool is built around ANSI Z10/CSA Z1000 compliant electrical safety. The audit software is free for one year to those who sign up for an e-Hazard.com external on-site audit.
There are now four materials with patented performance to ANSI 107. Performance Textiles and Glen Raven lead the charge with wovens and a new mesh.
ITI boasts a new arc rated fleece which also meets ANSI 107.
Tencate offers its TecaSafe Plus in an ANSI 107 version.
SSM is offering a new high-vis t-shirt material.
KnowYourFR.com was rolled out from Workrite and Westex. This site has a recorded training video on things to consider when choosing flame resistant clothing. Excellent and non-partisan.
NEW Paulson Faceshield 16 cal/cm² rating to fit most hard caps. This new shield uses a new nanotechnology to give better vision and protection. This will work for those wanting more protection than the common 8 shields.

|
| Milliken Announces 6 oz Flame Resistant Shirt Fabrics with HRC 2 Rating |
|
| Now there is a new fabric in the 6-6.5 oz range which meets HRC 2.
Milliken is the first 88/12 cotton nylon under 6.3 oz as tested which meets HRC 2.
Several 88/12 blends are now in the 6.9-7.9 oz range as tested and three blended fabrics meet the HRC 2 in less than 7 oz as tested but these are all real breakthrough’s. Most fabrics meet the standard in the range of 1 oz per cal/cm2 arc rating. But fabric construction and blending can achieve better results.

| NFPA 70E Still FREE to read online |
|
NFPA is committed to worker safety and offers the whole standard free to read online.
Dennis Berry, of NFPA pointed the site out to me in a converstation last week about South Africa’s growing use of NFPA 70E. The link is still live and free. NFPA members sign in with their user ID but anyone can have an ID and read any NFPA standard for free. You can’t search or print but they can all be read.

Our newsletter is sponsored by many companies around the world. If you have ideas for articles or have questions, don’t hesitate to write.
Sincerely,
Hugh Hoagland
